It reads school emails. It keeps secrets.
What Debs reads, what it keeps, what it never keeps, and how your family's information is looked after. In plain English.
Built the way we’d want it for our own children
Only the senders you choose
Read-only access to your email, and only emails from the school and club senders you pick are ever opened.
The email isn't kept
Each email and its attachments are read, the dates and to-dos are saved, and the email itself is dropped.
Locked up properly
Email access is encrypted, passwords are never stored (only a scrambled form of them), and everything travels over HTTPS.
Your say, every month
You agree to what Debs reads when you start, it asks again every 30 days, and you can change your mind whenever you like.
Yours to take or delete
Download everything Debs holds about your family in one click, or delete your account and it's gone.
Not used to train AI
The AI that reads your school emails doesn't learn from them: our AI provider's commercial terms don't allow it.
Only what it needs to run your week
- What you add: your children's names, schools, year groups, classes, teachers, birthdays, clubs and notes
- What Debs finds in school emails: dates, events, to-dos, what to pack, and links to book or pay
- Medical and allergy notes, only if you give separate, explicit consent
- A 7-day list of which emails were read (when, who from, the subject line), so you can see what Debs has done. Never the content
- Chores & stars: the jobs and rewards you set, and the stars your children earn
- Your family: the people you invite, helpers for lifts, and the parents' own plans
- Your settings, and a record of what you consented to and when
And what it leaves alone
- The emails themselves, or their attachments
- Emails from anyone you haven't chosen to watch (they're never opened)
- Your email password (Gmail and Outlook connect through their own sign-in; other providers use an app password, stored encrypted)
- Recordings of your voice, or of anything you say to Alexa: only the text is used, and it isn't kept
- Photos you show Debs: they're read and dropped, like email attachments
- Card or bank details: when paid plans start, Stripe handles them and we never see your card number
- Anything for advertising: no adverts, and no tracking on this website
The technical bits
- HTTPS everywhere, and secure, HTTP-only login cookies
- Email access keys encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM) and never sent to your browser
- Passwords stored only as a salted scrypt hash, so nobody (including us) can read them
- Login sessions stored only as a one-way hash, and ended after 30 days
- Every request checked against your account: one family can never see another's data
- View-only access for grandparents and carers: they can see the week, not change it
- Sign-ins and chat rate-limited to stop guessing and abuse
- Anything written in an email is treated as information, never as an instruction to Debs
The services Debs relies on
- Anthropic (the AI provider)
- Reads the school emails and answers your questions. Emails and questions are sent from our server, never your browser. Under Anthropic's commercial terms they aren't used to train its models, and are kept only for a limited time for safety checks. Processing may take place outside the UK, under Anthropic's data protection terms.
- Railway (our hosting provider)
- Runs the app and stores its database, on servers in Europe (the EU).
- Google, Microsoft or your email provider
- Only if you connect your email, to fetch the emails from the senders you've chosen.
- OpenAI's speech service
- Only if you tap the microphone: your voice note is turned into text, with your family's names so they're spelt right. Not used to train its models, deleted within 30 days, and Debs keeps only the text. Where it isn't switched on, your phone does this itself.
- Microsoft Azure AI Speech
- Only when Debs reads an answer aloud: the text of her answer goes to Microsoft's UK data centre and comes back as her voice. Microsoft doesn't store the text or the audio, so neither is used for training.
- Amazon (Alexa)
- Only if you link the “our Debs” skill: Amazon handles what you say to Alexa under its own privacy notice, and Debs's answers (and the calendar on an Echo Show) go back through it.
- Resend
- Sends our emails to you: sign-in codes, password resets and welcome emails.
- Your phone's notification service
- Only if you turn on reminders, to deliver them to your phone.
- postcodes.io and Open-Meteo
- For the weather at school: only the school's postcode and location are sent, never anything about your family.
What parents ask us
Can the school see my family's information?
No. Debs is independent: it isn't run by any school, academy trust or council. Schools can't see your children, calendar or to-dos. If Debs spots a school-wide date (like an INSET day) in the school's own email, it can suggest it for the shared school page, but only the date is used and a person has to approve it first.
Can other parents see anything?
No. Everything about your family is visible only to you and the people you invite into your family.
Does Debs read my personal emails?
No. It only opens emails from the senders you choose. If you add a family member who forwards you school emails, it opens only the emails they forward on, and none of their others.
What happens when I delete my account?
Your children, calendar, notes, settings and email connection are deleted. The one thing kept is a record of the consent you gave, for 6 years, as the law expects, and by then it no longer contains your email address, only a one-way code made from it.
Do my children use Debs?
Only if you want them to. A parent can give a child a PIN for My day (the kids' app), which shows just that child's day (what to wear, what to pack and their jobs) and lets them tick jobs off. It can't see anything else, change anything or use the chat, and nothing is ever sent to children.
Who do I contact about my data?
Use the contact page and a person will reply. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
The full details are in the app’s privacy notice, which you read and agree to when you first log in. This website’s own privacy policy is here.
